History With a 156-year history, the YMCA of Central Kentucky is one of the oldest nonprofit agencies in Central Kentucky. We are a vital presence in our community, operating in partnership with private industry, government and other human service agencies.
The YMCA of Greater Lexington began operation in 1853 in the First Presbyterian Church at Broadway and Second Streets and is recognized as the eighteenth YMCA chartered in the United States. After moving to several locations throughout Lexington, in 1950 the YMCA moved to 239 E. High Street. As the demand for YMCA services grew, the YMCA opened additional facility operations and program centers in Fayette, Scott and Jessamine Counties. In 1995, the National YMCA approved expansion of our service area to Woodford County.
Overview Today, the YMCA of Central Kentucky operates 3 facilities in Lexington serving over 25,000 members. With an ever-growing program presence in Jessamine and Scott Counties, the YMCA annually reaches an additional 25,000 people with aquatic, childcare, camping, youth sports and teen programs.
As many have discovered, a YMCA membership cultivates strength, instills core values and brings balance to lives. Think of it as an investment in the well being of self, family and community. In doing so, your heart will be strengthened in ways you’ve never imagined.
Financial Assistance We want everyone to have an opportunity to participate in YMCA activities, yet sometimes people face financial hardships that make participation difficult. For this reason, the YMCA offers financial assistance to those with a demonstrated need.
This assistance is made possible through an annual fundraising effort called Campaign for Kids. All money raised through the campaign goes directly into a separate fund used solely for the purpose of assisting others to access Y programs such as childcare, camp, swim lessons, youth sports or membership.
Facility Description This office is the metropolitan headquarters for the YMCAs in this region.
