History/Overview
The Kentucky YMCA Youth Association, Inc., operates the oldest and largest YMCA teen organization action program in the nation. We have helped organize and develop Student  YMCAs in the schools and other programs throughout the Commonwealth since 1912.

The Kentucky YMCA believes in its members being active and visible throughout the  community. Helping others through service-earning projects, speaking out on current issues and attending statewide programs that promote leadership-building skills and

lcultural awareness are a few of the ways that today's young people can become actively involved.

Programs
Program offerings include the following:

  • Student YMCAs (formerly Y Clubs) is a school or community based structure that promotes service, leadership, and character development through student-organized service to the school and community and fellowship with peers, adults and YMCA staff.  There are over 6,000 Student YMCA members in more than 155 affiliated chartered groups across Kentucky.  All young people in 6th-12th grade who are looking for the best opportunities in civic engagement, Christian values, responsibility, academics and motivation are encouraged to join a Student YMCA.

  • Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA) is a Youth in Government program designed to provide hands-on experience in the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches of government. The overall goal of the conference is to teach the mechanics of government and to impress upon students the importance of active participation to the success of a democracy.

Fundamentally KYA exists because Democracy must be learned by each generation. For three days, students play the various roles integral to the operation of a state government, including state representative, senator, lobbyist, member of the press, Supreme Court justice, Governor and more.

  • Kentucky United Nations Assembly (KUNA) is a three-day experience in diplomacy that provides students and adult leaders with a greater appreciation for our global community through hands-on involvement with international issues and solutions. The conference is geared toward developing students’ international consciousness through role-play as they represent one of the members of the United Nations.

  • Go For It! (GFIC) is a three-day inspirational and motivational experience that gives today’s teens opportunities to develop their character and self worth, share the thrill of empowerment and strengthen the art of communication with their peers.  Students have the opportunity to reflect on the school year to date, share their perspectives with their peers in a relaxed environment and chart options for their futures.

  • Leadership Training Conference (LTC) helps teens focus on innovative opportunities to develop their character and self worth, share the thrill of empowerment and strengthen the art of communication with their peers. Such activities instill a sense of ownership among them and help them better meet the daily challenges that face them.

At LTC we help our young friends accomplish these things by creating an open atmosphere for personal growth. Hundreds of teens from throughout Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina come together to share in this unique five-day experience at a secluded campus setting.

  • Mentoring - This program pairs high school "Y-Mentors" with middle school students to participate in character development activities.

  • Conference on National Affairs - Selected delegates from Kentucky debate their peers from across the country at the weeklong event held at the YMCA Conference Center in beautiful Black Mountain, North Carolina.

  • Service to the South (STTS) and Service to the Commonwealth (STTC) - Offer incredible service-learning opportunities to several of our most active YMCA kids across the state. Through presentations, fundraising, travel, teamwork, community service, self-discovery, group sharing and spiritual renewal, we nurture the desire these young people have to extend our mission into communities within the state of Kentucky and throughout the southern United States

  • Louisville Metro Youth Leaders - A partnership between Metro Government and the KY YMCA-Youth Association. The program’s mission is to engage and educate teens on the issues facing Louisville Metro, through interaction with community and business leaders. The program offers 10th and 11th grade students an opportunity to meet with Metro Government Officials and learn about issues facing the community. The program offers four sessions.
