Mission To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
History Although the YMCA in America is not aligned with any of the Christian denominations, it sprang into being 150 years ago through the deep Christian faith of its founders.
This is no less true for the Frankfort Y than it was for the Boston organization where the YMCA in America first took shape. First mention of a Y in Frankfort can be found in The State Journal’s archives from the 1860s. This is long before Christian men representing nearly all denominations in town formally signed the Articles of Incorporation in 1917.
Today as then, Christian men, and now women too, govern and guide the Frankfort YMCA and its work. They do this as an unspoken, but obvious, expression of their Christian faith.
Despite our Christian roots, not everyone involved in the Frankfort Y is religious. And today, not everyone involved in the Frankfort Y is of the Christian faith. But all have an abiding belief in the value of each human life. For Christian and non-Christian alike, this belief is the uniting force motivating them to give what they can of their time, their talent and their treasure to carry out the Frankfort YMCA’s mission.
The YMCA mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all is the inspirational force prompting the donors, volunteers, members and staff to work tirelessly toward the Frankfort YMCA’s goal of building strong kids, strong families and a strong community in our Kentucky homeland.
